This research project aims to develop new synthetic methods to obtain derivatives of various types of gamma-butyrolactone using multicomponent processes. First, we intend to test some multicomponent synthetic procedures described in the literature. Then, we intend to improve these procedures by replacing the catalytic systems and/or the nature of the ligands, substituting the organometallic reagents, modifying the solvent-dependent aggregation states, and using heating by microwave irradiation and ultrasound. In this way, we expect to synthesize several compounds with great structural diversity, such as biologically active derivatives of natural products, to obtain new compounds of pharmacological interest. It will be necessary to purify the synthesized products and to adequately elucidate their structures by various spectroscopic methods. Subsequently, we will conduct various kinds of biological assays using the obtained compounds. This last part of the project will have the collaboration of researchers from the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences of Ribeirão Preto of USP, University of Franca, Federal University of ABC, and Istituto di Chimica Biomolecolare of CNR, Sassari, Italy; with which we maintain collaborative projects.
