Abstract

In view of the greater aesthetic requirement of patients, dental ceramics have been studied in search of better properties. However, ceramic abrasiveness is controversial in the literature. Several studies evaluated wear resistance of ceramics using different materials as antagonists. The authors have related that ceramic abrasiveness is poorly correlated to microhardness and has been affected by its fracture strength once ceramic wear is featured by crack growth until debris are released, acting as an abrasive agent. There are relates that ceramic surface is prone to attack by acid fluoride which causes higher wear rates. Nevertheless, there are not studies in the literature evaluating ceramic wear at fluoride environment. Because patients with crowns and prostheses of ceramic will use preventive agents with fluoride in their composition, the aim of the present study will be to evaluate the effect of neutral and acid fluoride gels, used as preventive agents of professional use, in the wear resistance of a dental ceramic. For this, samples will be submitted to wear test in fluoride or non-fluoride environment, and after will be subject to microhardness and fracture strength evaluation. (AU)
