Abstract

The Center for Environmental Research and Training, CEPEMA-USP (www.cepema.usp.br) is a newly created research center of the University of São Paulo (USP), located in Cubatão, SP, dedicated to environmental research and education. The primary mission of CEPEMA-USP is to provide a multi-disciplinary environment that will serve to focalize research from all sectors of problems the University on the solution of real-world environmental, in harmony with the public and private sectors of society. Formally associated with the Chemical Engineering Department of the USP Engineering School (Escola Politécnica, EP-USP), CEPEMA-USP. The primary mission of CEPEMA-USP is to serve as a focal point for research efforts involving all sectors of the University of São Paulo. Research initiatives of the Center that are funded (by the Brazilian agencies FAPESP, CAPES (PROCAD), CNPq and FINEP, by industries like Petrobras and Vale and by BNDES) and already Consolidated include: the simulation and optimization of processes of interest to the chemical industry (minimization of environmental impact, energy use, scheduling to enhance efficiency, etc.); improvements in on-line process monitoring; water reuse, with integration of technologies; (photo)-remediation of effluents and residues; novel-catalysts for advanced oxidation processes; remete sensing of atmospheric pollutants; development of predictive models for atmospheric pollutants; molecular, biological origins of intrinsic or acquired resistance to pollutants; detection and identification of algal bloom toxins; the application of supercritical fluids to environmental problems; the transport and dispersion of pollutants and metals in soils; remediation of contaminated soils; environmental education at the Fundamental and High School level with the School of Future.
