Abstract

Ecological restoration has been considered one of the main strategies for combining conservation and restoration of biodiversity and ecosystem services in agricultural production in Brazil, although there are still many bottlenecks in that area. In this research proposal, we designed five sections to investigate the challenges for forest restoration in highly-modified landscapes, with the aim to: (Section 1) test management practices on the remaining forest fragments in order to enhance its role in conservation and restoration of biodiversity and to generate forest products and ecosystem services (Atlantic Forest), as well as generating forest products (Amazon), (S.2) test methodologies of restoration of riparian forests with diferent width to- achieve its ecological functions, aiming to test scientifically the changes in the forest code, as well as to reduce restoration costs (S.3) test methodologies of restoration with native forests timber production and, non-timber forest products within the concept of Legal Reserve in the unproductive and marginalized areas of the rural properties (S.4) conduct long-term monitoring of reference ecosystems of endangered biomes, to accumulate knowledge on forest dynamics to improve efforts of conservation and restoration of biodiversity and (S.5) test methodologies for evaluating and monitoring natural and restored areas to define efficient indicators of ecological sustainability and, economically viable for producing consistent protocols. The results will provide subsidies to scientifically support restoration actions and, mainly, public policies and legal instruments on restoration and conservation of degradated remnants to improve their role in provisioning ecosystem services and conserving biodiversity.
