Abstract

The aviation industry is highly committed to reduce carbon dioxide making air transportation sustainable! Among the actions, several companies are considering the use of sustainable biofuels to replace fossil kerosene. Biofuels, if produced sustainably, can be an ideal technical solution (as "drop in fuel") and also create quality jobs and wealth, both locally and globally. With these objectives in mind BOEING, EMBRAER and FAPESP signed in October 2011 an agreement to investigate how could Brazil be part of this endeavor. The aims of this project were to identify the main challenges to be overcome to produce a sustainable bio-based alternative fuel to substitute conventional aviation kerosene. Led by a group of experts, research was focused to build a roadmap for sustainable biofuels for aviation in Brazil. Several meetings and workshops with scientists, experts, and different stakeholders, took place all over Brazil, including São Paulo, Rio and Brasilia, to openly discuss each topic of the roadmap, including feedstocks, refining technologies, sustainability, logistics, policies and R&D gaps.This publication (Flightpath to Aviation Biofuels in Brazil: Action Plan) contains the objectives and basic findings for research and public policies in order to help to create this new industry in Brazil. The creation of new biofuels for aviation industry may represent a great opportunity for Brazil. Thus, a series of recommendations are included: promoting more research for the production of sustainable feedstocks, more incentives to overcome conversion technologies barriers including scaling up issues, greater involvement and interaction between private and government stakeholders, and the creation of a national strategy to make Brazil a leading country in the aviation biofuels industry.
