Teachers exposed to violence in childhood and youth: analyzing the reflections of this exposition in the culture of violence production in school environments

Abstract

This project is a continuation of what I have been developing, mainly, over the past ten years, with the collaboration of my undergraduate students of the Pedagogy course, students who are doing a master's degree, a PhD or doing undergraduate research. They are the last three members of the group I lead, entitled "Research group about School Education based on the Pierre's Bourdie ideas" (CNPq). This proposition comes directly from the project entitled "Violence by teachers denounced by their victims: a structure of professional habitus in Brazilian teachers". This project was financed by FAPESP (processes no. 2010-11054-6, 2011/06521-7 and nº 2012/04119-0), completed in March 2013. Likewise, this proposition comes from a project entitled "What students say about the participation or the non-participation of the teachers in the culture of violence production in school environments: investigating the complexity of the phenomenon", which is being financed by CNPq (process no. 401083/2011-0 (Public Notice 07/2011) and is foreseen to be concluded by December 2013. It is a quantitative and qualitative approach. The data collection instrument will be a semi-structured interview and the subjects will be Elementary School teachers who work in two public schools in the city of Araraquara, located in the state of São Paulo. The main goal is to give voice to teachers with the purpose of obtaining information about the early life of these professionals with respect to whether or not they have been exposed to some kind of violence when they were children or young, in order to (thinking about the abuse cycle and the culture of violence in school environments) start a useful reflection about the initial and continuing training of the teachers whose goal is to understand the conception of their violent behavior in school. The purpose is to find answers to solve this problem with the conscious participation of the teachers. Especially with regards to the quantitative and the qualitative characteristic of the research, which is directly related to the organization and data analysis, concerning the extraction of information and the organization of the categories, these procedures will be operationalized using the content analysis technique according to Bardin (1977). Depending on the results obtained from the interviews, the use of this technique can be changed. To perform the analysis itself, with and from the elaborated categories, we will review the bibliography used for this study, which refers to the authors Bernard Charlot, ÉricDebarbieux, Alba Zaluar, Pierre Bourdieu, Catherine Blaya, José Vicente Tavares dos Santos, BernadeteGatti (that studies the profile of the Brazilian teachers). Furthermore, works from NEV/USP researchers will be checked because of their studies about the violence in many societies, types of violence and their relation with school and society. As usually occurs in researches, the types of data collected may ask for another theoretical contribution. I am open to it, since this does not create a methodological-theoretical paradox under the rationality of the investigation. (AU)
