Water governance in touristic areas cases of study: mature destination (Costa Brava, Spain) vs non-consolidated destination (litoral norte de São Paulo, Brazil)

Abstract

The coasts zones have demanded special attention because of potential climate changes, which may result in fluctuations in sea levei causing vulnerability and risks in the littoral. The coast has always been the main interest area of tourism and their implementations have contributed to social and environmental changes. The scenario of climate change and these transformations in the coastal touristic destinations have put these areas as priority of research. Although, researches about changes in tourist areas have been developed since the 1970s, there are gaps in knowledge about some vital elements to maintain natural and socioeconomic characteristics on littoral. One of these elements is water. The studies on water quality and quantity, and its governance has been a regional approach, not being guided to a particular sector. There is ignorance about the water demands in touristic destinations. This project aims to study the hidrosociais cycles involving water demands and conflicts with other sectors in two touristic destinations: the Costa Brava, in Spain, which is an internationally recognized touristic destination and the northern coast of São Paulo, Brazil, which still is configured as a regional tourism destination. Expected to contribute to water management in touristic destinations and exchange of knowledge of two universities (USP and UdG) researching these topics in the study areas. (AU)
