Determination of biological aspects of Quesada gigas (Olivier, 1790) (Hemiptera: Cicadidae) aiming to improve pest control

Abstract

The cicadas Quesada gigas (Olivier, 1790) (Hemiptera : Cicadidae) is considered a key pest in coffee. The damage caused by Q. gigas varies with the stage of development of the nymphs that occur in the plantation and the level of infestation, and may result in total damage to infested crops. Damage to coffee production occur due to continuous suction a lot of plant sap, resulting in stunting of shoots and apical chlorosis and falling leaves from the twigs of the plant attacked. Despite its importance as a pest in coffee, biological aspects of the species, such as embryonic development and spatial distribution, are still unknown. Thus, the objectives of this study are to describe the embryonic development, assess the viability of eggs, determine the spatial distribution of the pest in coffee culture with the use of geostatistics and evaluate new strategies that enable the creation of nymphs of Q. gigas in conditions laboratory. Data collection will be conducted in the area of the Experimental Station of Agricultural Research of Minas Gerais - EPAMIG, farms and agricultural production of coffee, all located in São Sebastião do Paraíso - MG. The analysis of the proposed biological parameters will be developed in laboratories, Universidade Estadual Paulista "Julio de Mesquita Filho "in Jaboticabal - SP (UNESP / FCAV). It is expected this work to obtain knowledge about biological aspects of Q. gigas which may subsequently applied research aimed at guiding the management of this pest. (AU)
