Abstract

Robotic technology is evolving from a situation where robots were completely isolated from people to a situation in which robots and humans coexist side by side. We have examples from personal robots, such as cleaning robots and robots " pets " and also the case of robots specially developed to work side by side of people as Baxter developed by the Robotics Rethink. The natural evolution of robotics is robot closer to human beings in personal and industrial robotics. Personal robotics can supply robots to help humans physically, or even mentally, allowing a comfortable and independent life. The industries continuously will integrate robots on their production lines pointing to a future where robots and humans share space to perform tasks together. This scenario of ubiquitous robots demand the achievement of several technological challenges. Part of the challenges to be addressed are in a growing field of robotics known as human-robot interaction (HRI). This research addresses a theme in HRI that is the Non-verbal Human-Robot interaction, which aims to obtain information about the mental state of a person in an interaction from data obtained by sensors, that can obtain information about body posture, facial expressions, tone of voice and direction to where a person is looking, among others, which are important aspects of human interaction in everyday life. In this scenario, the goal of this research is to integrate to the robot receptionist developed at the Robotics Institute of Carnegie Mellon University, Brazilian's characteristics and the ability to interact with people based on non-verbal information. One of the potential applications of this work is the screening of people in attendance, such as in health centers. (AU)
