Modeling and simulation of particles coating in fluidized bed

Abstract

In the Fapesp project (2011/04230-5) is proposed to develop new processes for making thermoregulatory particles using Phase Change Materials (PCMs). The particles themselves are innovative, but also, attention should be paid to their production processes. In this context, one of the incipient methods for the production of this type of particles is the coating in fluidized bed, and despite promising cost advantages in industrial terms, it is still necessary to make a study of scale-up, development of particles according to the melting point of the different PCMs and the restricted diameters required for different applications. The fluidized bed operates due to a combination of phenomena of momentum, heat and mass transfer. When the flow regime is well established, there is a homogeneity in terms of transfer, and it can make use of thermal and motion profiles generated in the bed for proposing modifications to allow operation of, for example, evaporating a solution to a lower temperature, reduce the residence time in bed or even change the geometry of the equipment. An extremely important tool for providing these profiles is the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and although many of the available licenses are expensive, there is an open source (OpenFOAM) developed by the ESI Group Ltd OpenCFD for solving problems that involve flows of fluids including solutions for flows with chemical reactions, heat transfer, solid dynamics and electromagnetics. The OpenFOAM code, free to use, has recently attracted the attention of a wide international scientific community, both in terms of usage and validation as well as the development of new utilities and solvers, currently the subject of intense study activity and development. Pr. Dr. Almerindo Ferreira has been worked for many years with the development of this application for dynamic studies of wind tunnels and energy saving and during previous contact established in the University of Coimbra (Portugal), we saw the development of collaborative projects as a way to expand both fields of research. In the period from October to December of the second half of 2014, Prof. Dr. Ferreira will be working in Brazil, at PUC and UFRGS (Porto Alegre), during his sabbatical, and the objective is, through this project, defray the cost of domestic travel (Porto Alegre - Campinas - Porto Alegre) and subsistence, allowing the Visiting Professor stay for a week in Limeira (FCA). In this period, it will be at the Faculty of Applied Sciences, the Prof. Dr. Denis Poncelet (French Chairs - FAEPEX/Unicamp), whom we had advanced on the preparation of a draft Bilateral Cooperation for the implementation of control systems based on Labview graphical design platform. This approach strengthens the importance of the development of computational tools for process optimization, providing powerful tools for the identification and analysis and opens a field of study improvements in the design of reactors, formulations and coating quality.
