Abstract
The sugar energy agribusiness, despite its tradition and its importance to the Brazilian economy, has been subject to criticism and concerns regarding the negative environmental impacts that their productive processes and steps lead to the environment. This is because the sugarcane production has an industrial activity with massive potential for environmental impact. An industrial plant that produces sugar and ethanol, rule or release into the environment several waste or by-products such as vinasse, crude ethanol, manufactures lubricating oils, fusel oil, laboratory wastes, gas, bagasse, ferrous and non-ferrous scraps, vats washing effluents, floors and equipment washing effluents, cane washing wastes, among others, which can significantly impact human health and the environment if they are improperly designed. Thus, whether because of societal pressures for adoption of more appropriate models for environmental compliance with environmental legislation, or even because of the strategic opportunity for differentiation, the sugar energy plants are adopting new environmental practices in order to improve the environmental performance of their production processes. In this context, the aim of this research project is to develop a methodological framework for Environmental Performance Evaluation (EPE) of sugar and ethanol manufacturing processes covering aspects related to the stability and preservation of the natural environment as well as aspects relating to the protection of human health (AU)
