Abstract

The purpose of this blinded, randomized and controlled trial is to compare the effectiveness of BoNTA (treated groups) using three dosages (30U of BoNTA in masseter muscles and 10U of BoNTA in anterior temporal / 50U of BoNTA in muscles masseter and 20U of BoNTA in anterior temporal / 70U of BoNTA in masseter / 25 of BoNTA in anterior temporal) in chronic pain TMD, when compared to occlusal splint (positive control group) or 0.9% saline solution at the same site of BoNTA puction (negative control group). One hundred volunteers classified by RDC / TMD - GI muscle will participate and randomly divided into five groups (n = 20): positive control group will be treated with counseling and occlusal splint, negative control group will be treated with counseling and saline applications, and the treated groups that will receive counseling and BoNTA in different dosages. The dependent variables will be subjective measurement of pain intensity by Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), objective analysis of the pressure pain threshold by algometry, and electromyographic evaluation of masseter and anterior temporal muscles. It will be made before, during and after interventions (7, 14, 21, 28, 90, and 180 days after application of the treatments). Proper statistical tools will be used for data analysis, considering 5% significance are used. (AU)
