Abstract

Due to ecological features amphibians are particularly sensitive to environmental changes. Global amphibian declines and associated extinction risk have been worrying specialists and more studies on amphibian diversity are necessary. The Atlantic Forest occurs in a large latitudinal range and exhibits climatic diversity associated to the topographic complexity. Few studies have been evaluated the altitudinal gradients in the amphibian diversity of this biome. The mosaic of protected areas of the Lagamar, including the lagunar-estuarine complex of Iguape-Cananéia-Paranaguá, provides special conditions to amphibian studies. The main objective of this project is to improve the amphibian existing Knowledge at the Lagamar of São Paulo and Paraná states. These studies could support important amphibian research focused on geographic distribution, diversification and conservation. The amphibian diversity at the altitudinal gradient of Lagamar is an important outcome of this project. Some species will be selected to investigate the effects of global climate changes in the distinct habitats. Amphibian species with geographic restricted range associated to highlands or lowlands will be compared to widespread species considering the impacts of climate changes in present and future scenarios. Our results could be used to conservation planning and management. Species distribution models will be used to predict habitat suitability in present and future climate conditions with available data of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). In addition to impacts caused by temperature and sea level fluctuations on the target-species potential distributions, we also aim to evaluate the environmental and landscape changes related to anthropic disturbance. According to material availability some amphibian species will be used to investigate historic and biogeographic processes related to Atlantic Forest species diversification. Among them, the species within the genus Brachycephalus are candidates to these evolutionary studies. For these and other amphibian species the Lagamar constitutes an important sampling gap. Past scenarios of climate changes will be evaluated considering specially the Guapiara lineament and the Ribeira de Iguape River, consistent geographic barriers coincident with phylogeographic breaks for several vertebrate species of Atlantic Forest Our results may be very useful to better propose conservation actions for amphibians in a scenario of Global warming and also provide data for innovative and impactful studies.
