Development and evaluation of topical formulations for oral mucositis treatment containing Spilanthol

Abstract

Spilanthol or afinin is an alkylamide found in herbs, among them, Spilanthes acmella (L.) L., and have several pharmacological properties such as anti-inflammatory, anesthetic and antioxidant activities. These properties may be of great interest in the treatment of oral mucositis, a typical side effect due to the treatment of cancer patients undergoing radiation and chemotherapy. The aim of this work is to obtain oral formulations to combat mucositis, with the incorporation of spilanthol obtained by supercritical extraction and evaluate their anti-inflammatory activity through experimental models. For this purpose different bioadhesives will be selected to choose the most suitable for oral use, with properties such as flexibility, elasticity, color, taste and controlled release of spilanthol, that can bring comfort to the patient by avoiding the frequent change. Experiments in vitro and also anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive activities in vivo models of paw edema induced by carrageenan and gastrointestinal mucositis with subsequent histopathological analysis will also be performed.
