Abstract

The project aims to study the impact of K substitution by Na on the Eucalyptus response to water stress throughout the plant growth, up to 6 years. Field experiments are already underway at the Itatinga Experimental Station of ESALQ/USP as part of a joint projects between ESALQ and CIRAD (Projeto Tematico FAPESP 2010/16623-9, Projeto Regular 02/11827-9, 05/60312-0), where an innovative trial of water exclusion was assembled. Our goal is to introduce a wood survey approach by anatomical, cambial activity studies including girth growth monitoring, to the ecophysiological studies that are being conducted in the current projects, and to the functional genomics approach of transcriptomics and proteomics of Max Feffer Plant Genetics Laboratorio from Genetic Department of ESALQ/USP, using the same trees. We aim to identify during the wood formation the key properties that might be involved in the regulation of water use efficiency, as well as the effects upon Na+ substitution by K+ in Eucalyptus. The improvement in the understanding of the wood formation combined with hydraulic capacities of Eucalyptus in this context will be beneficial for selection of adapted genotypes to water stress and environments with limited fertility. The project is part of a joint research program established between the Departments of Genetics and Forest Sciences of ESALQ/USP and Cirad (France). Two scientists from Cirad, Dr. Gilles Chaix and MS Bénédicte Favreau, are already working at ESALQ and will lead this project together with a group of Master and PhD students and post-docs of the wood anatomy and wood identification Laboratory of ESALQ-Usp.
