Abstract

Occurrence of microalgae and cyanobacteria blooms in both freshwater and marine environments frequently occur, often with the release of toxic metabolites (e.g., microcystins, saxitoxins, okadaic acid and its congeners, pectenotoxins, and ichthyotoxins). Other classes of bioactive non-toxic natural products, however, have also been observed for these species but their biochemical and physiological functions still remain unclear. It has been suggested that some of these bioactive metabolites play an important role as allelochemicals and quorum sensing compounds. However, the literature concerning its effects in mammals is rare. This bilateral cooperation intends to use nove I analytical chemistry methods as a tool to investigate metabolites produced by microalgae and cyanobateria and their possible mechanism of action and accumulation in aquatic organisms. The knowledge gained from these experiments will also allow us to discover possible risk for seafood and fish consumers. Experiments will be carried to identify their chemical structures, mechanism of action and risk assessment. Both partners have significant expertise as researchers in this field as well as are coordinators and principal investigators of large-scale projects and interdisciplinary research consortia. (AU)
