Occurrence of retinochoroiditis attributable to toxpoplasmosis and risk factors, in Cassia dos Coqueiros, São Paulo

Abstract

The incidence of toxoplasmosis is known to be higher in the South of Brazil, especially in the northern region of Rio Grande do Sul, but it is not known for sure if this pattern of increased prevalence occurs in other areas of the country. Ocular involvement in toxoplasmosis mainly manifests as retinochoroiditis, which is diagnosed on the basis of the characteristic appearance of the retinal injury and on positive serology for toxoplasmosis, without taking into consideration its titer. Objectives: The main objectives of the present study are: to determine the prevalence of patients with positive serology (IgG and/or IgM) for toxoplasmosis, to verify the frequency of ocular lesions caused by T. gondii in patients with positive serology, and to characterize this population in terms of epidemiological, socioeconomic, behavioral and demographic variables. Method: Serological tests for toxoplasmosis will be carried out by indirect immunofluorescence reaction. All patients with positive serology will be submitted to ophthalmological examination in order to investigate the presence of eventual injuries (active or cicatricial) suggestive of toxoplasmosis. Patient series: We will include in the study individuals residing in Cássia dos Coqueiros, SP, who participate in a population project (Protocol HCRP 3915/2010- Human Serum Bank of Cássia dos Coqueiros, São Paulo), who have positive serology for toxoplasmosis and who agree to participate.
