Abstract

Tropical forestes play a major role in the global water and carbono cycle but understanding how these forests will respond to projected future drier climate remains uncertain. Therefore, unveiling the mechanisms underlying drought resilience remains one of greatest challenges in tropical forest ecology and ecohydrology. The Project aims to synthesize plant physiological and engineering types of expertise in observing and modeling plant water relations of rainforests. Through this Project an ongoing partnership between the PI’s at The State University of Campinas, Department of Plant Biology, and the University of Michigan, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, will be further strengthened. The outcomes of this Project will be exposure of engineering methods and models for research applications of plant physiologists and training of engineering students in theory and experimental techniques related to plant hydraulics.
