Abstract

Premature babies and their mothers during their stay in the neonatal unit have been through stressful situations. We have as hypothesis that the Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) can help to reduce this kind stress. Our goals are: To analyze the last trimester of pregnancy mother's stress and the NICU mother's when the delivery occurs prematurely. To evaluate the effect of KMC in reducing preterm's chronic stress and mother's chronic stress. To compare the biological stress between KMC and conventional care. METHODS: This is a prospective comparative study. Sample: 25 mothers and25 PT into the KMC. Control group: 25 mothers and 25 PT without KMC. Inclusion criteria: PT admitted into the NICU with gestational age under 34 weeks, in incubator. The mother and PT's demographic data will be collected. The PSS: NICU and PSS instruments will be applied for the mothers. PT and mother's biological material (fingernails) will be collected. Two samples of mother's fingernails will be collected on the third week and third month after delivery. One baby's fingernails sample will be collected when the baby has three months. Biological materials will be sent to Canada to be analyzed in a specialized laboratory. The analysis of the PSS and PSS:NICU data will be done by descriptive statistics and the biological stress will be analyzed by fingernail's cortisol and dehydroepiandrosterone in different groups.
