Abstract

The purpose of the study is to characterize the fluency profile of patients with different neurologic diseases that have as one of the symptoms alterations of speech. The hypothesis of the study is that neurologic diseases will present differences regarding the fluency profile of patients, since these diseases have implications to different stages of speech production. Participants will be 80 individuals , with ages between 40 and 80 years, of both genders, divided into 4 groups: G1 (20 individuals with the diagnosis of stroke); G2 (20 individuals with the diagnosis of Parkinson's Disease); G3 (20 individuals with the diagnosis of traumatic brain injury); G4 ( 20 individuals with no communication or neurologic disorder - control group). For all of the participants six speech samples involving different tasks will be gathered: self-expressive speech (monologue and conversation), reading (individual and in chorus) and automatic speech (with and without speech melody). Participants presenting signs of stuttering will be assessed according to the SSI-3 in order to determine stuttering severity, These participants will also be assessed according to the "six features of neurogenic stuttering" (type of disrupted word, locus of speech disruption within the word, performance in different speech tasks, physical concomitants, effect of adaptation and anxiety). The results of the study will give a comprehensive view of possible fluency disorders in patients with neurologic diseases. In turn the results will enable a more precise selection of therapeutic techniques for speech rehabilitation in this specific population. (AU)
