Abstract

The support for Dr. Jens C. Frisvads visit to Brazil has as its main objective, research project collaboration with the ITAL Microbiology Reference Unit as well as participating in the 28th Brazilian Microbiology Congress which will take place in Florianópolis, state of Santa Catarina. Dr. Jens Frisvad is a researcher and professor at the Denmark Technical University in Lingby, Denmark in the area of Biological Systems and has been working on quimiotaxonomy in microrganisms. At this point in time he is one of the most important mycologists in the world being a member of the International Comisssion on Penicillium and Aspergillus, the Mycological Society of America and the British Mycological Society.Dr. Frisvad is the author of 252 published articles in international journals, 78 book chapters, principal editor or co-editor of five books and the author of three. Apart from this he has obtained three patents. Dr. Frisvad has undertaken a strong partnership with various research groups around the world mainly due to his pioneering work related to the taxonomy of fungi through its chemical metabolytes. The ITAL Microbiology research group has been active in such a partnership for some years now. His main help has been with the identification of toxigenic fungal species isolated from crop samples important for Brazilian agriculture as well as the description of new species. Concerning current projects, Dr. Frisvad will help in the identification of fungal species through morphological analysis and the chemical metabolites of Aspergillus section Flavi, A. section Nigri, A. section Circumdati and Penicillium. In projects already finalized the partnership has continued with the confirmation of species identification, after the final evaluation of polyphasic taxonomy and his expertise will be necessary for the publication and so far seven articles have been published all in high impact journals. Dr. Frisvads visit to Brazil also encompasses being a speaker at the 28th Brazilian Microbiology Congress in the sub-area of Mycotoxins. The following lecture will be given "Advances in Taxonomy of Aspergillus section Nigri, A. section Circumdati and A. section Flavi". (AU)
