Evaluation of a new model of metal bar stabilizer used in minimally invasive surgical repair of pectus excavatum

Abstract

Pectus excavatum (PE) is the most common chest wall deformity, occurring in approximately 1/1000 persons. Currently, surgical treatment through minimally invasive technique is consolidating as a technique of choice for the treatment of this disease. In this technique a temporary metal bar is placed in retrosternal position, and this will push anteriorly the sternumavoiding the necessity of cartilage resection. Despite the advantages obtained with this technique, complications may occur as the displacement of the bar is a major one. In order to minimize this problem we develop a new model of stabilizers, as well as all the necessary instruments to perform minimally invasive surgery. The main objective of this study is to compare in two surgical groups the use of the oblique stabilizer versus the use of conventional perpendicular stabilizer in order to determine which one has the lowest rate of displacement of metal bar. Furthermore, this study also aims to evaluate the whole set of instruments developed by a national company for this type of surgery, which will have cost compatible with our economic reality, and that will be accessible to patients of Public Health. Regarding the measurement of the severity of the defect in the chest wall, the main method used is the CT scan, which exposes the patient to ionizing radiation. This study also proposes the use of a non-irradiating evaluation method through the structured light scanner Artec EVA, avoiding the disadvantages of exposure to irradiation (AU)
