Genomic profile comparison between Brazilian and American women with breast cancer estrogen receptor positive/HER2 negative

Abstract

Breast cancer is currently considered a heterogeneous disease. Various phenotypic presentations of this neoplasia are described - whose histologic features and expression of protein markers (examples: hormone receptors, HER2, Ki-67) are reasonably well known - for which treatment protocols are well established, although in constant update. However, there is variability of prognosis and response to the same phenotypic standard breast cancer treatments available, which allows us to infer that the simple phenotypic evaluation of breast cancer does not allow the complete understanding of its clinical potential. Recent advances in genomics, particularly by improving techniques and equipment that can sequence genes of individuals and their tumors, make possible a better characterization of individuals with breast cancer, beyond simple histological, clinical and epidemiological research. This characterization at the genomic level, probably enable treatments aimed at molecular mechanisms of tumor formation and evolution as well as to elucidate the causes of failures to currently available treatments. In general, this project will evaluate the molecular sequences of several genes whose functions are potentially involved in the genesis and progression of breast cancer. The phenotypic characteristics of tumors and individuals, as well as the response to applied treatments and their outcome will be assessed for genomic features of tumors and affected individuals.
