Abstract

Urban use and soil occupation has been different both in population density and in services quality and collective equipments. This process of urban space production has changed the local landscapes and brought consequences to the socio-environmental conditions of the cities, as several impacts such as: hydrological, morphological, climatic, biogeographical, socio-economics and cultural. These problems are addressed in several academic works. In the public institutions they are spread and at different scales, preventing an integrated analysis of the local reality and there are few results from local researches that reaches the basic education for pedagogical purposes. In this way, its is understood that the environmental concept, which integrate historical, physical, social and cultural concepts to a comprehensive knowledge of the environment of Presidente Prudente county (Brazil) in the form of an environmental atlas, becomes an important resource of pedagogical support and territorial management and planning. The city of Presidente Prudente, São Paulo State, Brazil, has 210.393 inhabitants and is located at 22°07´32´´S, 51°23´20´´W, with elevations around 480 m. In the Presidente Prudente county predominate wide hills with softly waved tops and alluvial low lands with flat bottom morphology, low slopes varying from 5 to 20% and associations of oxisols and ultisols. Due to tha morphology the urban territorial expansion in Presidente Prudente had an occupation dynamic marked by the economical, political and social history of region. The major part of the urban area was settled over relief compartments on the hill tops (water divisor pin) and on the concave-convex, rectilinear and mixed hillsides (places with slopes) and in lower intensity, the bottom of the valleys (with its water streams) that undergo changes in the geomorphological process which generated socio-environmental impacts. The methodology used in this research will demand office and field activities. The office activities will be: a) organization, by cataloging the scientific production about themes related to the environment in Presidente Prudente; b) updating and manipulating of a geo-referred data bank in a system that deals with vectors and matrix data types and that can integrate remote sense data in a GIS. In order to feed this data bank it is available: ALOS-PRISMS satellite imagery; CBERS satellite imagery with resolution 20x20 m from the year 2011; digital cartographic basis with planimetric data of the Presidente Prudente county in scale 1:10,000 (provided by the cityhall of Presidente Prudente county); analogical topographic chart of Presidente Prudente in the scale 1:50,000; analogical aerial photographies of the Presidente Prudente county in the scale 1:25,000 from 1995 and digital ortophotos of the Presidente Prudente city in the scale 1:20,000 from 2003; c) elaboration of the data base to digital cartography to be carried out by ARCGIS (manipulation of socio-economics and environmental data). The field activities will be: a) Interview with social actors evolved in the construction of the environmental history of the county, researchers and representatives of public or private organizations directly evolved with the theme; b) photographic register of the Presidente Prudente landscape; c) gathering of GPS points to data checking and crossing in a GIS system; d) procedures to organizing the data bank in GIS system and digital cartography will occur after the definition of the cartographic features to be identified and coded into the data bank, this way compounding the cartographic basis and the association to other types of information (alphanumerics and graphical) or to the external data base.
