Abstract

Literature is showing promising results on the use of functional food to control gingivitis and periodontitis, however, the use of prebiotics [mananoligossacarids (MOS)] was not evaluated yet. The aim of the present study was to evaluate, through histologic and histometric analysis, the effect of MOS (Preb) administration on ligature-induced periodontal disease (PD) progression. 40 male rats will be used, randomly divided into the following groups: CG (control group), PDG (ligature-induced periodontal disease group), CG-Preb (control group + systemic administration of prebiotic) and PDG + Preb (ligature-induced periodontal disease + systemic administration of prebiotic). For groups CG-Preb and PDG-Preb, balanced feed incorporated with 1g of prebiotic per Kg of diet, starting 30 days before PD induction. The animals will be euthanized 14 days after PD induction and the hemi-mandibles will be processed for histologic and histometric analysis. Data will be grouped by experimental groups and analyzed according to the normality, considering the critical level for null hypothesis rejection less than 5% (p<0.05). We wish with this study to show that the use of prebiots could be considered an important tool on PD treatment. (AU)
