School profile of maltreated children and adolescents

Abstract

Children and adolescents exposed to maltreatment may present changes in school skills. The aim of this study will be to characterize the school areas (written language, arithmetic, social behavior and school motivation) of this population and assess the association between social risk factors (intensity of maltreatment, age of first-shelter and shelter) and this areas. One hundred and five children from 7 to 14 years old will be evaluate, all residing in shelters and with a history of maltreatment, accompanied by the Equilibrium Program, mental health service to attending this population. The following instruments will be applied to evaluate the school achievement and social variables: Teste de Compreensão Escrita, Teste de Compreensão Falada, Consciência Fonológica, Prova de Aritmética, Strengths and Difficulties Questionaire (SDQ), Escala de Motivação Escolar, Childhood Traummas Questionnaire (CTQ) and Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-Age Children-Present and Lifetime Version (K-SADS-PL); and interviews to caregivers and teachers. The associations between profiles of performances in different school areas and social risk factors were be evaluated, controlling for mental disorders and quotient inteelcutal. The results will be analyzed using logistic and linear regression. (AU)
