Abstract

Inflammation and oxidative stress are processes that occur simultaneously in obesity and contribute to an increased synthesis of inflammatory mediators and reactive oxygen and nitrogen species. The mineral selenium (Se), whose main food source is the Brazil nut (Bertholettia excelsa H.B.K), has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Considering the importance of inflammation in obesity and the potential anti-inflammatory role of selenium through selenoproteins, the influence of this micronutrient in this context is of great importance. In addition, the study of possible molecular mechanisms, such as microRNAs (miRNA), can provide more specific answers about the role of selenium in these pathways. This study aims to evaluate the effect the Brazil nut consumption as a source of Se on inflammation, oxidative stress and the expression of selenoprotein P and microRNAs in obese women. This will be a prospective longitudinal study. We will select 50 obese women, aged between 18 and 50 years, which will receive about 200 µg /Se a day, through the ingestion of Brazil-Brazil, for 60 days. We will assess before and after the intervention, the biochemical parameters related to the nutritional status of Se, oxidative stress, lipid profile, inflammatory markers and gene expression of selenoprotein P and microRNAs. Dietary intake of macronutrients and Se will be evaluated through three 24-hour recalls, performed before and after intervention. (AU)
