Effects of Gd and Mn additions on thermal, magnetic and mechanical properties of the Cu-9wt.%Al alloy

Abstract

This project aims to study the effects of the Gd and Mn additions on the thermal, magnetic and mechanical properties of the Cu-9wt.%Al alloy using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), differential thermal analysis (DTA), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), optical microscopy (OM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), microhardness changes with temperature and time, magnetization measurements with temperature and applied field, and stress-strain measurements. The results will give information on the phase transitions and its stability intervals in the Cu-9wt.%Al-10wt.%Mn-3wt.%Gd alloy, on the effects of Gd and Mn additions on the thermal, magnetic and mechanical behaviors of the Cu-9wt.%Al alloy, as well as modifications in the alloy microstructure due to the presences of Mn and Gd and on effects of the heat treatments of annealing, quenching and aging on the properties of the alloys.
