Abstract

The main goal of the visit of Dr. Iván Padrón is to make operational the large area, position sensitive neutron detector, which was built in our laboratory some years ago and not used since then. This detector was inspired in the "neutron wall" built at the National Super Conducting Cyclotron Laboratory of USA (East Lansing, Mi, USA). It has very interesting characteristics. The research group "Direct Reactions and Exotic Nuclei", which has installed and operates the RIBRAS (Radioactive Ion Beams in Brazil) system, which is the only radioactive beam facility of the continent, has special interest in using this neutron detector. The reason is that the neutron rich, radioactive beams, such as 8Li, 6He etc are weakly bound, they break-up in the reactions and neutrons are emitted. The detection of these neutrons in coincidence with the recoiling nucleus will give important additional informations on the reaction mechanisms. Dr. Iván Padrón will also participate in the experiments using this detector, such as reactions involving the systems 6He + 12C, 6He +27Al, 6He + 120Sn or 6He+208Pb, where the break-up mechanism will be studied as a function of the mass of the target.
