Abstract

Nowadays, miniaturization of biofuel cells (BFCs) is the biggest challenge in bioelectronics, which is directly dependent on obtaining stable and efficient enzymatic bioelectrodes. Our Group has proposed that electrodes based on individual graphene sheets, as well as flexible carbon fibers (FCFs), produce the most efficient bioelectrodes reported so far, these being applied in implantable BFCs. Thus, in this project we will develop new electrodes for use in biocathodes and bioanodes, with the focus on developing two classes of bioeletrodos, one with the FCFs and other with individual graphene sheets. Besides the micromanipulation of the electrodes, the non-catalytic processes of charge transfer using the Marcus theory will be investigated. Finally, the viability of electrodes application BCs will be investigated by studying the bioelectrocatalysis, particularly for glucose oxidation and oxygen reduction in a physiological medium. (AU)
