Evaluation of cardiac lesions via biomarkers in dogs with chronic monocytic ehrliquiose

Abstract

The canine monocytic ehrlichiosis is a disease with global importance, responsible for a large portion of the infectious diseases that affect dogs in the service routine of small animal's clinics. There are still physiopathogenic aspects of this hemoparasitosis that are not completely cleared. Because of that, many studies are still conducted in this field. It is known that the heart is also injured in dogs with ehrlichiosis. It had already been proved the occurrence of endocarditis and / or myocarditis by histopathology. The dosage of biomarkers is the principal noninvasive exam that detects early cardiac lesions. However, it is still unclear what's the prevalence and magnitude of these lesions in animals that are in the chronic phase of this disease. Until now, the studies that related these two conditions, observed that the cardiac troponin I increased in animals with acute and chronic ehrlichiosis. This study aims to correlate three cardiac biomarkers in this disease: the creatine kinase MB fraction, Cardiac Troponin I and the amino-terminal portion of Brain Natriuretic Peptides, called NT-proBNP. The latter in particular is a newfound protein extremely important because it is more sensitive to detect heart damage , as it increases in response of overload of volume and / or pressure. These biomarkers are part of a larger study , which not only correlate these variables between them as with clinical, electrocardiographic studies ( both conventional and ambulatory ) and the analysis of heart rate variability during 24 hours in animals with chronic ehrlichiosis.
