Analysis of the nanoemulsions associated with photodynamic therapy in the treatment of breast cancer

Abstract

Cancer remains one of the main problems of global health. Treatment of breast cancer involves the use of complex therapeutic resources, with unsatisfactory aesthetic results that imply, consequently, the social and psychological impairment of the patient due to originated mutilation of the breast region. Nanotechnology in the last decade, has emerged as one of the most promising tools for the cancer treatment. The nanoemulsions have attractive features as biological stability, biocompatibility, reduced toxicity associated with therapy against cancer, increased therapy efficiency, can be administered by different routes and can incorporate a wide variety of drug molecules. Therefore, the project aims to develop drug delivery nanoemulsions associated with photodynamic therapy for the treatment of breast cancer and to test the effectiveness of these nanoemulsions in vitro by nanoemulsion intracellular uptake, phototoxicity and cytotoxicity, cell proliferation and apoptosis assays. The efficiency of these nanoparticles are also tested in vivo by anti-tumor efficiency, analysis of the vascular permeability and angiogenesis. (AU)
