Abstract

The dichotomy between Anthozoaria x Medusozoa, major groups (subphyla) in Cnidaria, is closely related to distinct recognized life cycle patterns. Many subgroups within each of the Cnidaria subphylum have been studied using different approaches. However, Ceriantharia (a subgroup of Anthozoaria) remains a mystery in many aspects. A number of systematic positions have been inferred for this group and there is still no consensus. Ceriantharia have many peculiarities compared to other groups, including different genome structures from those known to Anthozoaria and even the possibility of holoplanktonic life cycles, unknown in Anthozoarian species. Molecular studies performed to date demonstrate that the position of Ceriantharia remains controversial, but exhibits a tendency to oppose the most frequent proposals (Ceriantharia + Hexacorallia). This scenario has many outcomes at various scales, especially related to the origin and time of divergence among groups. Based on the above explanation, this project proposes a comprehensive evaluation of Ceriantharia and its connection with other clades of Cnidaria. The proposal will incorporate morphological, biological data (life cycle and behavior) and molecular data of Ceriantharian species to assess the phylogenetic relationship within Ceriantharia and among other clades of Cnidaria. A large amount of new information will be generated that will be reverted to publications in the area showing an improved scenario of this group. This project will allow the formation of a new research group, enabling it to level with other international laboratories. (AU)
