Abstract
In order to understand locomotor adaptation and its usefulness to gait rehabilitation, the effects observed during walking with partial body weight support (PBWS) and the locomotor adaptation to overground walking, which is the surface we walk on daily basis, will be investigate in this research project. The target population will be individuals with hemiparesis due to stroke that usually participate on gait training with PBWS. At first, those individuals will be evaluated walking at self-selected comfortable speed on a walkway and with PBWS over the ground and on treadmill. Later, they will be allocated randomically to a specific training group that will receive a single 15 minutes session of gait training with PBWS over the ground (OGG) or on a treadmill (TMG), and each subject will be evaluated before the training session ("free walking"), during the first 5 minutes of gait training with PBWS, during the last 5 minutes of gait training with PBWS and after the training session ("free walking"). Variability, symmetry ratios, transference index measurements and gait spatial-temporal parameters will be calculated for all evaluations. (AU)
