Abstract

Barychelidae is a spider mygalomorph family having high species richness in the Oceania, but with representatives in Africa and the New World as well. Two hundreds and ninety five species are known in the world, of which fifty five were described from the New World. Of these, thirty species were included in the genera Psalistops Simon, 1889 and Trichopelma Simon, 1888, that, together, comprise the subfamily Trichopelmatinae. Species of these two genera are distributed by the Central and South America and the Caribbean. This subfamily was never taxonomically revised despite the uncertainties on its cladistic relationships with other barychelid subfamilies; as well as with other families as Theraphosidae, in which it was proposed it could belong. The unresolved taxonomic questions are due to many species that were described based on a single specimen and the uninformative taxonomic descriptions normally having no illustration or indication of diagnostic characteres. Therefore, this project aims the taxonomic revision and cladistic analysis of the genera Trichopelma and Psalistops, and to shed light on the cladistic relationship among their species and that of other barychelids, paratropidids and theraphosids. New species eventually detected as well as previously unknown males and females individuals will be described, if availables. (AU)
