Abstract
Eriosema (DC.) Desv. has pantropical distribution, with two main centers of diversity for about 150 species, one in Africa and one in the Americas, whereis registered the occurrence of 38 species, of which 30 occur in Brazil. The genus is included in Phaseoleae tribe, Cajaninaesubtribe, which has been considered monophyletic in current phylogenies. In contrast, little is known about the interspecific relationships in Eriosema and even about their precise distinction with Rhynchosia, genus more phylogenetically related. The few phylogenetic works with these genera do not sample more than two species, a fact that does not explain the monophyly of them. The distinction between these two genera is basically the location of point of the insertion of funiculus of the seed relative to the hilum, terminal in Eriosema and central, sub-central or terminal in Rhynchosia. Eriosema is morphologically uniform, making it difficult to delimitation of species, which are circumscribed mainly by foliar characters, which can be variable according to environmental conditions. The most recent taxonomic treatment of the genus was published by Grear in 1970, which only dealt the American species. Considering the richness existing Eriosema of taxa in Brazil , little discontinuity between characters infrageneric diagnostics, the lack of recent taxonomic studies of this genus, and the little knowledge about the phylogenetic relationships in Cajaninae, especially Eriosema with Rhynchosia, this study aims: carry out a taxonomic study of the species of Eriosema occurring in Brazil; test the monophyly of Eriosema; clarify the definition of Eriosema with members of Cajaninae, especially with Rhynchosia; study the phylogeny in order to verify the interspecific relationships; propose, if relevant, a infrageneric classification for Eriosema according to the observed phylogenetic patterns; determine time of diversification of the genus; and reconstruction of ancestral characters based on mainly in secretory structures.
