Abstract

Cryptosporidiosis has already been described in many animal species, including amphibians, birds, mammals, fishes and reptiles. Human infection has been described in more than 90 countries from six continents. Even there is no consensus about the definitive classification for Cryptosporidium species, some authors suggest that there are, at least, 27 valid species. This study aims to determine the occurrence of Cryptosporidium spp., to perform its molecular characterization and to compare the microscopy using the malachite green negative staining technique versus nested-PCR (diagnosis of Cryptosporidium spp.), and the nested PCR followed by sequencing of amplified fragments versus the duplex real-time PCR (diagnosis of C. galli and avian genotype III from birds), in fecal samples of canaries (Serinus canaria), domestic poultry and wild psittacine birds raised in captivity from the South and Southeast regions of Brazil.
