Abstract
The growing demand of water forced to reduce its waste and input the need of re-use it. However, the occurrence of pharmaceuticals drugs in wastewaters are widely reported in last two decades which it is a concern based on the ecotoxicological effects confirmed to humans, aquatic fauna and flora. Thus, the development of analytical methods are essential in order tomonitor the presence of pharmaceuticals drugs in wastewaters. These methods are also necessary to evaluate the treatment applied in the wastewater treatment plants; moreover to supply studies involving the development of new wastewater treatment technologies. Then, this project aims to develop paper-based microfluidic microsystems (¼PADs) to analyze six pharmaceuticals drugs present wastewaters. ¼PADs using wax and toner as hydrophobic barriers and polymeric ¼PADs will be studied in this project. Colorimetric methods will be developed using scanner detection and cell phone cameras. Also, a mass spectrometry direct coupling will be studied using polymeric ¼PADs. Application of microfluidic microsystems using complex samples is scarce, mainly for monitoring of pharmaceuticals drugs in wastewaters. In this project, samples of lab-made sewage, anaerobic bioreactor affluent and effluent, domestic and hospital sewage will be analyzed. As future perspective is to develop a low cost, precise and accurate microfluidic microsystems to monitor pharmaceuticals drugs in wastewaters samples. (AU)
