Abstract

Fluoroquinolones are antimicrobials often prescribed in Brazil and in other countries and used to treat several types of infections, especially those of urinary and gastrointestinal tract. The action of these compounds is due to inhibition of DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, preventing replication of bacterial DNA. Mutations in the QRDR region (Quinolone Resistance-Determining Regions) of these genes, especially in the gyrA gene, corresponds to the main quinolone resistance mechanism, however, other mechanisms of resistance may be present, including the acquisition of plasmid determinants [qnr, qepA and aac (6 ') - Ib-cr] and changes in permeability of the efflux pump AcrAB-TolC.The objective of this project is to identify the main resistance mechanisms to quinolones in soil bacterial isolates and identify the main genera from this microbiota that carry such determinants of resistance.
