BRAIN INFLAMMATION IN DOGS WITH VISCERAL LEISHMANIASIS: Activation of Innate and Adaptative Immune Response.

Abstract

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a disease with different clinical manifestations in dogs, varying fromsubclinical to generalized. Dogs chronically infected may present neurologic deficits, however only fewreports have characterize lesions that may contribute to better understand the pathogenesis of theneurologic form of VL. Results from previous projects have demonstrated the presence of inflammatorylesions in the brain of dogs, characterized by meningitis and choroiditis, composed by T lymphocytes, glial cells activation, neuronal degeneration, as well as the presence of matrix metalloproteinases andexpression of inflammatory mediators. These data indicate that during VL there are stimuli to establishthe inflammatory alterations, even without the detection of the protozoa in the brain. The pathogenesis ofthese lesions was not fully understand. The usefulness of PCR Profiler technology allows to simultaneously evaluate 84 of genes expressed of different ways, allowing the selection of genes for future studies. Thus, the first aim of this study is to characterize the genic expression in the brain (eg.periventricular region) of dogs with and without visceral leishmaniasis. We hope to continue previousprojects, evaluating brain lesions in dogs VL and investigating the mechanisms and genes related toinflammation and morphological changes in the brain of the dogs with VL comparing both immunological responses in the spleen and in the brain (AU)
