Eucalyptus thinning in integration Crop-Livestock-Forest system: effects on microclimate and productivity

Abstract

Even with the increased deployment of crop-livestock-forest integration areas in Brazil, the basic knowledge of the interaction that occurs between elements of the system, in order to support their understanding and management activities, it is still scarce. This proposal aims to assess the microclimate and water dynamics in soil related to production traits in woody systems under the influence of the tree component thinning. The experiment will be conducted at Embrapa Cattle Southeast, São Carlos, SP, with four livestock production systems with Urochloa (syn. Brachiaria) brizantha cv. Piata: rotational grazing system (ROT); shaded pasture system with eucalyptus clonal GG100 (15x2m) (SSP); integrated crop livestock system with renewal of pasture with corn for silage every three years (ILP); and integrated crop-livestock-forest system with renewal of pasture with corn for silage every three years and shaded with eucalyptus clonal GG100 (15x2m) (ILPF). Upon thinning, data will be collected for determination of eucalyptus production estimate allometric equation in these systems. After thinning 50% of the trees of the SSP and IAFP systems, microclimate and water available in the soil will be studied on an ongoing basis in these systems and without the presence of the tree component. During the trial period will be evaluated, production and chemical quality of pastures and corn for silage, as well as animal production. In both systems containing eucalyptus trees, the data will be made on transects between two rows. The results will support management actions in integrated livestock production systems. (AU)
