Abstract
Introduction: The literature has been shown a high prevalence of chronic pain in children and adolescents, including temporomandibular disorders (TMD). Painful conditions, especially the chronic forms, often co-occur in the same individuals and are associated with emotional and psychosocial changes. In adolescents, the association of TMD with other conditions is not yet well established. Aim: To investigate the relationship between painful TMD and comorbidities in adolescents. Methods: The sample will be composed of 700 individuals of both genders aged between 12 to 14 years old (350 with painful TMD and 350 controls). We will collect socio-demographic data, and all volunteers will be evaluated using the following validated instruments and techniques: Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC / TMD) for TMD classification; Faces Scale-Revised (FPS-R) for pain intensity evaluation; Pressure pain threshold (PPT) by trigeminal and extra-trigeminal algometry; Sexual maturation according to Tanner stages; Body composition (body mass index, skinfold thickness, waist circumference and bioimpedance); Physical Activity; Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory TM - PedsQLTM to evaluate the quality of life; Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children and Sleep Behavior Questionnaire; Standardized Nordic Questionnaire to assess the persistent body pain; Criteria of the International Headache Society-II for diagnostic headache; Inventory-CDI Children Depression; Yunus criteria for FM in adolescents. The chi-square or Fisher's exact test will be applied to study the associations of interest. Logistic regression models and linear will be used to estimate the odds ratio between the presence and intensity of painful TMD and independent variables. (AU)
