Abstract

Genetics of complex diseases and drug responses are the main targets of Pharmacogenetics. The idea is to try to determine the chances of a given person to develop a disease or not respond to common pharmacological treatments. Regarding erectile dysfunction, it has already been shown a close relationship between this disease, cardiovascular risk, and future cardiovascular-related death. The early diagnosis not only improves patient's life quality but also benefits patients as they tend to initiate early their cardiovascular treatments and postpone the onset of more serious cardiovascular diseases. Genetic and biochemical biomarkers that we investigate here may be beneficial at providing tools to early identify and diagnose these patients and provide better pharmacological treatment to their illness. This is a strictly observational case-control study. Will be included 100 patients with erectile dysfunction and 110 age, ethnicity, and body mass index paired healthy controls. Genomic DNA and plasma samples will be obtained in order to assess nitric oxide and cortisol pathways. Biochemical and genetic biomarkers will be evaluated regarding their association with disease risk and pharmacological response. (AU)
