Abstract

The project proposes to study the contributions of diverse cultures in art and architecture in the Jesuit Missions (1549-1759, since the establishment of the Jesuits in São Vicente to their expulsion from Portuguese America) in the current territory of the State of São Paulo, through the comparison of data and information contained in inventories, catalogs, letters and chronicles written by Jesuits, as well as the iconographic and textual sources produced by religious and travelers, in the collections of objects from the colonial period, with the results of archaeological excavations. It will also be considered the material coming from underwater archaeological work, coming from shipwrecks on the routes that united Brazil with the Portuguese colonies in the East. The study of this reality, in comparative perspective with other missions of the Jesuits in the ancient states of Brazil and Maranhão and Grão-Pará, will help to define more clearly the plural characteristics of artistic and architectural culture of the Baroque in Portuguese America, and better understand the dynamics and exchanges that took place in the context of the missions in Brazil, among indigenous and exogenous cultures, especially those of the Iberian Peninsula and Portuguese colonies in Asia. Thus, we intend to deploy an interdisciplinary study area between archeology and the history of architecture and art, which can collaborate, using the methods of these disciplines, to renew research on the Baroque in São Paulo and Brazil.
