Systematics of the order Batrachospermales with emphasis on the genera Sirodotia and Batrachospermum

Abstract

The project consists in the molecular analysis (phylogenetic, filogeographic and genetic) of members of the genera Sirodotia and Batrachospermum (sections Turfosa and Virescentia), as well as morphological documentation applying new and current characters. On the basis of currently available evidences (morphological and molecular) on members of these groups worldwide, the following hypothesis will be tested: 1) the genus Sirodotia and these sections of Batrachospermum are monophyletic within the order, with their recognition and the proposal to resolve the paraphyly of Batrachospermum will result in raising these sections to genera. 2) the species currently recognized within the study groups on the basis of morphological grounds will be corroborated by the molecular evidence, in addition, other species (particularly cryptic species) will be revealed as distinct species based on genetic, morphologic and geographic evidences. 3) the genetic similarity among the populations of each species will be progressively lower as they are geographically more distant, with higher genetic divergence among than within populations. To test these hypotheses the following aims are proposed: a) infer the phylogenetic relationships, as well as the inter-specific limits of variation within the study groups, as well with other members of the Batrachospermales on the basis of two molecular markers (plastidial rbcL and mitochondrial barcode region of cox1). b) prepare a revisional study for Sirodotia and the two sections of Batrachospermum by reevaluation of the diagnostic taxonomic charachters for species of these groups, considering the new molecular data. c) analyze the genetic variation levels within and among populations, as well as the phylogeographic patterns of selected species occurring in Brazil based on cox1, cox2-3 and micro-satellite markers.
