i-Caloric Effects

Abstract

In this project, experimental and theoretical issues related to the magnetocaloric effect and mechanocaloric effect will be addressed. Concerning the mechanocaloric effect, it is proposed the optimization of a system, which is being developed at CNPEM, for measurements of adiabatic temperature change induced by the pressure change in mechanocaloric materials. Besides, it will be developed a new automated system for measurements of mechanocaloric effect and X-ray diffraction, at the present synchrotron and at the new one, as a function of pressure and temperature. Several polymers will be studied using both systems. A thermodynamical model will be developed to be applied to the temperature change data obtained for the polymers. Concerning the magnetocaloric effect, it is proposed the preparation and characterization of new materials that should have good potential to technological application due to their high magnetocaloric efficiency and/or low cost. The following magnetocaloric materials will be studied: Tb5Ge2Si2 and compounds of the series MnFe(Sn,Si) and (Tb,Pr)Ni2. A theoretical model will be used to a better understanding of the magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of the series (Tb,Pr)Ni2. (AU)
