Botanical inseticide incorporation in active packaging system to flour products

Abstract

The interest in active packaging development have been increasing due to the industrial application potenctial and the positive impact on food quality and safety. Botanical inseticides are resultant compounds of secundary metabolim of plants and are chemical defense against herbivore insects. The use of botanical inseticides against weevil in flour coud be an alternative sustanaible and ecologic due to the reduced toxicity to human, reduced ambiental polluition and less residual agrotoxic in food products. The weevils attack in food products obtained from wheat flour is world-known with commercial losses and reduced nutritional value to the consumers. The incorporation of botanic inseticides (essential oil) in chitosan films, a natural and biodegradable polymer, and the application as a coating on a cardpaper surface will create a new active packaging system com potenctial action against the weevil in flour products. Initially, two botanical inseticides will be test, Neem (Azadirachta indica) and lemon grass (Cymbopogon citratus) using a Fatorial Experimental Design, in direct contact with wheat flour pre-contaminated. The best botanical inseticide will be incorporated into chitosan filmogenic matrix and will be apply as a coating on cardpaper surface. The best formulation will be defined based on an Experimental fatorial Design 23. The active packaging system will be characterized of barrier, mechanical and microstrucutre properties. In additional, the active system will be evaluate in vivo, pack pasta pre contamined with weevil Sitophilus zeamais. Acceptance Sensorial Test will be applied in cooked pasta aconditioned in active packaging system. This new material is patenteable. (AU)
