Abstract

From 1999, with the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL), a number of UN peacekeeping operations were authorized to use force to protect the mandate and/or civilians under threat of violence. In 2016, 11 of the 16 operations on-going were under a mandate which authorized the use of force to protect civilians. The project, being developed within the Group of Studies and Research on International Conflict, aims to analyse the use of force to protect civilians in UN peacekeeping operations and their impact on the peace processes. The research will be conducted on UN reports and documents of selected peacekeeping operations, reports of Brazilian militaries who served in these missions and interviews with people directly involved with the use of force in political, strategic and operational levels. It is understood that the study of use of force and protection of civilians has fundamental importance and applications in many fields, especially in international politics and international relations.
