Abstract

Introduction: Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most prevalent rheumatic diseases in the elderly. Physical therapy through therapeutic exercise, aerobic exercise and physical agents can improve symptoms related to OA. Objective: To evaluate the aerobic fitness, muscle strength and pain in patients with knee osteoarthritis after phototherapy in the quadriceps muscle. Methods: Will be recruited 34 patients clinically diagnosed with knee OA, according to the American College of Rheumatology criteria through x-ray image. Patients will be randomly assigned to two groups of 17 participants. Group 1: undergo an exercise treatment program associated with application of placebo and group 2: the same exercise program associated with phototherapy. The groups will be treated for 12 weeks with a frequency of 3 times per week. All patients will undergo pre- and post-treatment quality of life questionnaire (WHOQOL-abbreviated), funcional capacity questionnaire (WOMAC), numeric scale of pain (END), muscle strength (isokinetic dynamometer), volume maximum oxygen uptake (VO2max), and metabolic acidosis (lactate). Statistical analysis: To evaluate the measurements in the placebo and Phototherapy groups, the Student t test for unrelated samples will be used. To study the behavior of groups over the estimated time, according to the variables of the remaining interest will be used to model ANOVA with repeated measures followed by the method of multiple comparisons of Bonferroni.
