Abstract

The blue marlin, Makaira nigricans (Lacépède, 1802) is widely distributed in subtropical and tropical waters, and occasionally in temperate waters of the Atlantic Ocean. This fish has great ecological importance to be on top of the food chain and carry out extensive migrations. The most extensive was recorded from a blue marlin deployed with a conventional tag that traveled from the Atlantic (Delaware) to the Indian Ocean (Mauricio Islands). The stock of M. nigricans is over-exploited with little information about their distribution and biology to the area and time of occurrence in the South Atlantic. The species with low economic value is captured incidentally in commercial fishing longlines, and has a high economic added value in sport fishing with the practice of catch and release. As Brazil has the sport world record (636 kg registered by the International Game Fish Association-IGFA), there was interest in the implementation of Project Marlim, with the main yacht clubs of the Brazilian coast. Therefore, the first captures, tagging and releases using conventional tags began at the Yacht Club of Ilhabela-SP, in the seasons 1992/93. The electronic tag was first used in Canavieiras, BA in 2006. The use of electronic tags PSAT POP UP, archival data, has the advantage that the fish do not need to be recaptured because they pop-up automatically, due to prior programming, float to the surface and send the data to the ARGOS satellite (Advanced Reasearch and Global Observation Satellite). With the cooperation of sport fishing of YCI and Iate Clube do Rio de Janeiro, we intend to deploy 5 electronic tags. Two will programmed to be released and send information to the satellite after four months, and the other three after twelve months. This project has the North American cooperation of two expert professors in that area. The species has its commercialization prohibited throughout the Brazilian territory (Instruction No. 12, 2005, SEAP), however there is great difficulty in the enforcement of the law. The project intends to study the migration of blue marlin caught in different areas for different countries, aiming its conservation in the South Atlantic. (AU)
